God Bless...

God Bless... is a one-act drama about an African-American family coping with a member who, in their view, has squandered his potential and become lost to the "street life." In reality, Uncle Billy, a Vietnam War veteran, is a victim of post traumatic stress disorder, which he refused to recognize. Consequently, he is left to using alcohol to deal with his problems.

After several attempts at getting Uncle Billy into treatment failed, his sister Leona has lost her patience and is ready to throw in the towel. Despite the trials and tribulations, Leona’s son Justus has looked upon Uncle Billy as a surrogate father and maintained a close, non-judgmental, caring relationship. In Scene 2, the relationship leads to a sharing of stories about guilt-rendering experiences. With the addition of disinhibition stemming from his consumption of beer, Uncle Billy discloses to Justus the heavy burden he has been carrying from his days as a Marine. The final act of the play reveals that the discussion with Justus was a turning point in Uncle Billy’s life.

Uncle Billy uses harsh language and speaks a heavy street dialect. Staging essentials are limited to a modest kitchen layout.

Reading time for the play is 30-35 minutes.
