Synopsis

The Jock
by
Bob Chubon

The Jock is a one-act comedy developed around a triangular relationship involving Studs Monehan, a college football player, his computer wiz roommate, Ronnie, and Studs’ girlfriend, Ashley. That the egocentric, arrogant, and perhaps, crude Studs and the studious and considerate Ronnie are incompatible is an understatement. Studs’ Achilles heel is revealed when he gets into academic difficulty. He is forced to enter into a Faustian bargain with Ronnie, who agrees to write an "A" paper for him. In return, Studs agrees to permit Ronnie to ask Ashley for a date and support the idea if she accepts. However, after Ronnie’s masterful work bails him out, Studs has second thoughts about carrying out his part of the proposition. In the end, Studs’ desperate measures to renege on his commitment fail, and justice triumphs.

Staging required for The Jock is modest, and the cast is limited to four. Reading time is approximately 30 minutes.
